Man United: Souness claims Jonny Evans is better than Harry Maguire

Graeme Souness admits he is ‘baffled’ that Manchester United sold Jonny Evans, claiming the Leicester man is ‘BETTER’ than Harry Maguire – who is yet to win a single trophy since his £80m move to Old Trafford

  • Jonny Evans made 198 appearances for Man United before departing in 2015
  • Harry Maguire joined club in 2019 for £80m, a world-record fee for a defender
  • The club captain is yet to win any silverware since moving to Manchester

Graeme Souness has slammed Manchester United’s decision to allow Jonny Evans to leave in 2015, as he believes the experienced centre back is a better player than Harry Maguire.

Evans came through the club’s academy and went on to play alongside legendary figures at Old Trafford, including Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

However, six years ago, he was deemed surplus to requirements, and was moved on to West Brom. He has since switched clubs again, having opted to join Leicester in 2018, and he helped the team win their first ever FA Cup earlier this year.

Harry Maguire has been far from his best at the heart of Man United’s defence this season

Meanwhile, United have been looking to fix their defensive issues in recent seasons, and they made a statement of intent in the transfer market back in 2019 when they paid a staggering £80million for Maguire.

The 28-year-old has been unable to get the club back to winning major trophies, though, and Souness has admitted that he does not view Maguire as an upgrade on Evans.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the Sky Sports pundit questioned United’s transfer policy, saying: ‘The thing you have to get right at a football club is recruitment and since Fergie went it has been a masterclass in how to get it wrong.

‘That’s how I see it. You look at the players they’ve brought in, the players they’ve sold.

‘Jonny Evans was allowed to leave. Jonny Evans is better than any centre-half they have now.

‘I just don’t get it.’

Souness’ comments may raise a few eyebrows given that United now have a World Cup winner in Raphael Varane on their books.

However, the former Real Madrid man has struggled with fitness issues since arriving in England in the summer, while Maguire has looked off the pace this term after playing a crucial role in England’s run to the European Championships final in July.

Following a recent suspension after getting sent off against Watford last month, Maguire is set to return to action when United host Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the Premier League on Thursday.
