Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo wanted the club to terminate his contract this summer in order for him to move to Turkey, according to transfer expert Duncan Castles. Rojo, 30, has not played for United since coming on as a late substitute in the 3-1 win over Brighton in November 2019. The Argentine rejoined Estudiantes on loan for the second half of last season but made just one appearance.
Rojo was linked with a move to Lazio, among others, in the summer window.
Castles says there was interest in Turkey and that the player was keen on a move.
However, Rojo had his request of United paying off his contract to make him a free agent rejected.
“Interestingly, Manchester United again hanging on to Marcos Rojo against their will you could say, but also I can tell you that there were offers for Rojo to move to Turkey,” Castles said on the Transfer Window podcast.

“He was prepared to go there, he was asking that Manchester United pay off his contract in a similar fashion to West Ham United who have paid off Wilshere’s contract.
“Instead, United will keep him in the dressing room and will see how much playing time he gets under Solskjaer this season and whether he can be available on a consistent basis and be used on a basis where it makes sense to retain him in the squad, presumably with a view to trying again to sell him in January when he only has six months left on his contract anyway.”

Brazil said on talkSPORT: “I thought it was maybe too big a job for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but then they went on a great run and then at the end of the season we all suddenly thought United were going to be back up there, it’s going to be a big year next season.
“And I thought fair enough, they’ve stuck with Ole and he’s producing.
“But here we go again… Pochettino is still there, and you just look at his CV, it’s fantastic.
“If they had to make an appointment and say ‘see ya later’ to Ole, he’d be perfect for Manchester United.
“I’d like to see [Solskjaer] do well, I really would, but the stats don’t lie and now he’s really up against it.
“Is he buying the players now? I’m not 100 per cent if he is. If he is, why is he not buying in defenders to stop that rot? You can’t keep giving goals away like that, it’s an absolute joke.
“So they’re back to square one as far as I’m concerned.”
