Man Utd and Liverpool set to repeat Cody Gakpo transfer tussle

Football Digest: Liverpool 'embarrassed' by transfer rejections

Manchester United and Liverpool are set to go head-to-head for the season-long loan signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, according to reports. The two clubs previously battled it out to land fellow Dutch ace Cody Gakpo, with Liverpool eventually coming up trumps ahead of their bitter rivals.

United were heavily linked with Gakpo last summer and again in January after he had excelled for the Netherlands at the World Cup. They ended up being beaten to his signature by Liverpool, who acted quickly to wrap up a surprise £44million deal at the turn of the year.

It seems as though another transfer battle involving United and Liverpool could soon take shape with just 11 days remaining until the summer window closes. Both clubs are eager to sign Gravenberch, according to The Mirror, and have already submitted contract offers to the player’s representatives.

Gravenberch is reportedly set to hold showdown talks with Thomas Tuchel over his future at Bayern after making just three Bundesliga starts last season. However, it is said that he is more likely to be loaned out for the campaign than sold, with the German champions reluctant to let him leave on a permanent basis.

There is a possibility that a deal could be done for the right price, though, which could give United and Liverpool fresh hope of tempting Bayern into a sale. Gravenberch is said to be valued at around £22m and is looking for guarantees over his playing time after being left as an unused substitute in Bayern’s last two fixtures.

He is said to be worried about losing his place in the Netherlands squad if he fails to play regularly, with the Euros set to be held in Germany in less than a year. The midfielder has played just once for his country since joining Bayern, who paid £16m to sign him from Ajax in the summer of 2022.

It remains to be seen whether United or Liverpool will end up landing Gravenberch this summer, with former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood having already claimed that Anfield would be his most likely destination. A number of exits in midfield have left the Reds thin on the ground and a move for Gravenberch over the coming days would make sense for Jurgen Klopp.

“If you look at their squad at the moment, can they be the champions of the Premier League again? Absolutely not,” said Sherwood on Sky Sports News. “Anything can happen in the next couple of weeks. I am sure Ryan Gravenberch will go in there, the midfield player from Bayern, he hasn’t played since he has been there.”
