Manchester United need to sign “another Bruno Fernandes” in order to challenge with rivals Manchester City, according to former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood. Fernandes has been United’s talisman since he joined the club from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020. The Portugal international is the Red Devils’ leading scorer this season with 21 goals to his name in all competitions.
United’s hopes of a first title win in eight years have faded somewhat in recent weeks following disappointing results against Sheffield United and Everton, as well as rivals City hitting top form.
But the fact Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are near the top of the table is largely down to the impact of Fernandes.
Sherwood says he has a winning mentality that other United players need to have.
And he says the recruitment staff need to do all they can to bring in more players like Fernandes.

“I watch him all the time,” Sherwood said on Soccer Saturday.
“At the end of the game when they haven’t won the game, he just shoots down the tunnel.
“He’s so despondent, he has no interest in shaking hands with anyone. It’s just ‘get me down the tunnel’ and it looks like he’s in there shaking his head at all his team-mates.
“He cannot do anymore than what he’s done for that football club. He’s been great.

“What they need to do is bring in a lot more like him. Whoever went and found him, go and find another one.
“It won’t be easy but go and find another one because you need a few more if you’re going to challenge Man City.”
Meanwhile, former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf was full of praise for Fernandes after his brace in the 4-0 Europa League win over Real Sociedad on Thursday.
However, Leboeuf says Fernandes must be grateful for his team-mates helping him achieve what he has in front of goal.
“Yeah he did what he had to do and I’m very pleased that he showed that to the world, because people were wondering in the big games [whether] he will show his talent,” Leboeuf told ESPN FC.
“He did today if we can consider that was a big game. But overall it’s always the same thing with everybody.
“Everybody’s going to talk about [Kylian] Mbappe scoring three goals, Fernandes scoring two goals and both being exceptional.
“But you have to underline again for Manchester United the two midfield players in the middle of the park, Fred and McTominay, also Harry Maguire having a fantastic game.
“Without that, I’m not sure that Bruno Fernandes would have done the job.”
