Man Utd can land summer transfer target for free after he was released by club

Manchester United target Sam Johnstone has been released by West Brom – clearing the path for United to bring the England ace back to Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old shot-shopper came through the academy ranks at Old Trafford before departing the club without making a single first-team appearance back in 2018. Before sealing a permanent exit, Johnstone had been sent out on loan a staggering 10 times.

Since joining the Baggies, Johnstone has gone on to establish himself as one of the finest goalkeepers in the country after producing consistently excellent performances during West Brom's stint in the Premier League. Johnstone also earned international recognition last year, winning three senior England caps.

Unsurprisingly, Johnstone was courted by a host of top sides after West Brom slipped out of the Premier League last year. But after a move failed to materialise, Johnstone is now finally on his way back to the top-flight after running down his deal at the Hawthorns.

United are in the market for a homegrown goalkeeper to provide competition for David de Gea, who is reportedly on the verge of penning a new deal with the club. United's current No 2, Dean Henderson, is desperate to quit the club to pursue regular first-team football elsewhere.

However, they are set to face Premier League competition in the race for Johnstone's signature. Tottenham have also been linked with the coveted shot-stopper, while a new report from The Evening Standard this week outlined that Crystal Palace are long-term admirers of Johnstone and are mulling over a summer swoop.

Johnstone is one of 12 players who were confirmed to be leaving West Brom earlier this week when the Baggies unveiled their official retained list.

And the shot-stopper – who was popular with the club's fans after racking up over 160 appearances during his time in the Midlands – shared a touching farewell message via social media.

He posted: “Thankyou everyone @WBA for the last 4 years. Met some great people, made some great memory’s, and you helped me achieve my dream of playing in the premier league and for England. All the best for the future.”
