Manchester United will firm up their interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes over the next few weeks by submitting an official bid for his services.
The 24-year-old has been regularly linked with Manchester United amongst others following a stellar season in Portugal, however, Sporting’s asking price has proven to be prohibitive.
According to the Independent, United are confident of securing a deal before the transfer window shuts on August 8, although they will likely have to pay more than £50m to seal his signature.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to bolster his midfield options ahead of the upcoming season and it is reported that Fernandes’ arrival would not be dependent on Paul Pogba’s future.
Fernandes has emerged on the radar of a number of Europe’s top clubs following a blistering campaign in which he scored 20 goals and registered 13 assists in the Portuguese top-flight.
Following the departure of former Manchester United winger Nani to Orlando City, Fernandes also assumed the captaincy at Sporting and inspired the club to a Portuguese Cup final win.
Liverpool, Manchester City and Spurs have all been linked with Fernandes at different stages of the transfer window but they all have other targets that they are pursuing.
United have so far focussed their transfer policy on signing young, British players with Aaron Wan-Bissaka brought in to bolster the defence and Daniel James added to the attacking options.
The club also continues to be linked with Harry Maguire and it was reported on Sunday that a fee of £60m with an additional £20m in add-ons had been agreed with Leicester City.
