Manchester United have announced they have reached a deal with Real Madrid to sign Raphael Varane, with the French centre-back set to fly to Manchester for a medical.

In a statement, United confirmed: “Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of French international defender and World Cup winner, Raphaël Varane, subject to a medical and to player terms being finalised.”

Varane becomes united’s second marquee signing of the summer after the arrival of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

The French centre-back, who has won the Champions League four times as well as the 2018 World Cup, is set to fly to England for a medical.

He is set to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s new-look defence next season.

The deal is subject to a medical, which is set to be completed in the coming days.

Personal terms have reportedly been agreed, with the 28-year-old set to sign a long-term contract at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting his wages will match those of club captain Maguire.

Solskjaer was eager to improve his defensive strength this summer and quickly identified Varane as a target due to his quality and contractual status at the Bernabeu.

Varane, who was entering into the final year of his contract with the Spanish giants, had informed the club he wouldn’t sign an extension.

Instead, he wanted a move to the Premier League, a move he has now been granted.

United seem to have enjoyed success in their negotiations with Madrid, considering early reports that the La Liga side would demand £50m for their defender.

Instead, it has been widely speculated that United will pay closer to £42m for his signature.

Varane will join Sancho through the doors at Carrington, following the England international’s £73m move from Borussia Dortmund.

His signing caps off a hectic week for United off the pitch, following the announcement that Solskjaer had signed a new long-term contract to remain in the Old Trafford dugout.

In a statement of their own, Madrid thanked Varane for his decade of service to the club.

Varane first broke into the team at the Bernabeu aged just 18, and has been a mainstay ever since.

Madrid’s statement read: “Real Madrid CF and Manchester United FC have agreed to transfer the player Raphaël Varane.

“Our club thanks you for your professionalism and exemplary behavior during the ten seasons in which you have defended our shirt, with which you have won 18 titles: 4 Champions League, 4 Club World Cups, 3 European Super Cups, 3 Leagues, 1 Copa del Rey and 3 Spanish Super Cups.

“Real Madrid wants to show all its affection to Raphaël Varane and his family and wishes him good luck in this new stage of his professional career.”
