While the biggest story of Manchester United’s deadline day was the failure to complete a move for Jadon Sancho, the club did get several deals over the line.
Edinson Cavani has joined on a free transfer, while the Uruguayan’s compatriot Facundo Pellistri has completed a move from Penarol and a deal for Atalanta teenager Amad Diallo has also been agreed, with the youngster set to arrive in January.
United have also sold Chris Smalling to Roma, with the deal going through towards the end of the Italian window, but there could be more comings and goings domestically.
With Premier League clubs having until October 16 to complete business with their EFL counterparts, we have the latest on one United target, plus the fallout from two deadline day stories which went in different directions.
Sarr Watford exit collapsed ‘due to United interest’
With more than a week left for Manchester United to complete further signings from EFL clubs, Ismaila Sarr’s name is one which may come up in conversation over the coming days.
The Watford winger has been linked with a Premier League return after standing out for the Hornets during their relegation campaign last season, and United’s interest has been substantial enough to stand in the way of other deals, according to reports in France.
Ouest France (via Inside Futbol) reports that Sarr’s former club Rennes made a late move to bring the winger in on loan on deadline day, after selling Raphinha to Leeds United.
However, according to the French publication, Watford remain hopeful of selling the Senegal international to Manchester United in a permanent deal, having also seen loan interest from the Old Trafford club on Monday.
Sarr, who scored five times for Watford in last season’s Premier League, has made two appearances under new Hornets manager Vladimir Ivic in the Championship.

Manchester United’s interest in Ousmane Dembele ultimately did not lead to a deadline day deal, but a failure to complete an October move doesn’t mean their interest is gone forever,
United were reportedly keen to take the Barcelona man on loan, but reports in Spain hint that last-minute contract wranglings got in the way of a deal.
Citing reports from Mundo Deportivo and Sport, Sport Witness suggests Barcelona attempted to convince the French forward to sign a contract extension before moving on loan, prompting the deal to collapse.
It has been reported that Dembele, a big-money signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, has consistently been keen to stay at Camp Nou and is keen to fight for his place at Barca.
However, according to Sport, United could be convinced to come back in for the 23-year-old if he plays more minutes at Barcelona and proves his fitness after having a tough time with injuries since moving to La Liga.
Parma director claims his club had deal for United new-boy Diallo
Old Trafford-bound teenager Amad Diallo won’t arrive at his new club just yet, but the player’s move to Manchester United has already brought controversy.
For parts of the window, it looked as though the 18-year-old would be moving from Atalanta to Parma, only for United to steal in at the eleventh hour, much to the displeasure of Parma director Alessandro Lucarelli.
“You must ask Atalanta about Diallo,” Lucarelli told Sky Sport Italia (via TeamTalk)
“We had the agreement and then the negotiation with Manchester United started and they sold him.”
According to United’s announcement of the deal for the winger, which is subject to a work permit, medical and personal terms and will take effect in January, the club have been monitoring him since 2016.
Diallo made his Serie A debut for Atalanta last season, scoring in a 7-1 victory over Udinese, and played two further games for the Champions League quarter-finalists.
