Gareth Bale looks set to return to the Premier League this summer, but not with Manchester United.
The Wales talisman has been frozen out by Zinedine Zidane in recent months despite his importance to their success in the past – and Tottenham are ready to take him back on loan.
Although Bale had been keen to leave the Spanish capital in previous transfer windows, his huge wage packet alongside regular injury concerns had pushed away several interested parties.
That looks to have been the case for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and United, who have been trying to sign young players to build for the future rather than experienced internationals.
Sky Sports have now reported that the failure of Alexis Sanchez at Old Trafford played a part in the thinking of United officials in their decision to step away from Bale.
The Chile international joined the club from Arsenal having made his name as one of the best players in the league, but his poor form led to a loan and subsequent permanent move to Inter.
Although he joined on a swap deal without a transfer fee, his mammoth wages proved to be a stumbling block in their attempts to move the player on over the past two seasons.
Their report adds that United did not want to ‘repeat’ that mistake with Bale, and are likely to continue in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.
Solskjaer said back in March: “I can’t really comment on Gareth Bale or specific names because they’re property of other clubs.
“But we should look for quality players, definitely, and players who could improve us as a team.
"There’s so many factors you need to think about when you sign players.
