Man United do not have ONE player who would get in Liverpool’s starting XI, Graeme Souness insists after their 4-0 humbling at Anfield… with the Sky Sports pundit stressing that it ‘shows how far off they are’ as a club
- Manchester United suffered a 4-0 defeat away at Liverpool on Tuesday night
- Ralf Rangnick’s side were outclassed by the Reds on a miserable night at Anfield
- Graeme Souness is adamant that no United players would get in Liverpool’s team
- The former Kop boss says it shows how much they have declined as a club
Graeme Souness insists there is not one Manchester United player who would get in Liverpool’s starting XI following their 4-0 defeat at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Ralf Rangnick’s men were beaten convincingly on Merseyside, falling two goals behind early on when Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah fired the Reds ahead inside the opening 22 minutes.
Sadio Mane then put them out of sight with as many minutes remaining, before Salah added his second and Liverpool’s fourth late on.
It was a miserable showing from United, who Gary Neville blasted for producing a ‘hopeless’ performance at the home of their arch-rivals.
Graeme Souness says there is not one Man Utd player who would get in Liverpool’s starting XI
And after the game, Souness highlighted the gulf in class between the two clubs by claiming a combined Liverpool and United XI would only consist of Jurgen Klopp’s players.
He said on Sky Sports: ‘If you were to pick a strongest eleven [out of the two teams] I wouldn’t pick a Man United player in that eleven.
‘You just cannot put a United player in that team and it shows how far off they are.
‘Man United are a truly enormous club on the world stage, and how far they’ve dropped has been exposed again.’
He also added: ‘No one holds up a mirror and asks if they’re part of the problem. Managers come and go these boys get the manager sacked for fun.
United were trounced 4-0 at the home of their bitter rivals in another miserable outing
Ralf Rangnick’s men fell apart inside the opening 22 minutes at Anfield on Tuesday night
Souness believes United are currently without one player who could get in Liverpool’s side
‘Right now that group have taken United to where they are. Man United are a magnificent, one of the greatest football clubs in the world for what they’ve achieved, the disasters they’ve been through… They should not be struggling with a group of players like that it’s not acceptable.’
United’s overall record against Liverpool this term sees them trailing 9-0 after they were also thumped 5-0 by Klopp’s men at Old Trafford earlier in the season.
They are also staring the grim prospect of missing out on Champions League qualification directly in the face, with Tottenham and Arsenal ahead of them in fourth and fifth place despite playing fewer matches.
But Neville felt Tuesday’s humbling at Anfield was one of the lowest moments he has experienced with the club.
The Sky Sports pundit insists it highlights exactly how far they have declined as a club
‘I’ve been watching Man United for 42 years and this is as bad as it gets honestly,’ he said on commentary.
‘[I] watched them through the 80s. I’ve never seen a group have a lack of appetite to play during my time watching the club.’
After Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead on the night, Neville added: ‘Lets be fair this United team are a waste of space, however the football Liverpool are playing is absolutely sublime.
‘[David] De Gea is helpless as he’s watching the hopelessness ahead of him.’
