Manchester United are determined to pursue a move for Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga this summer, rather than wait for him to become available on a free transfer at the end of next season, according to reports. The 18-year-old, who will be out of contract in a year’s time, has been heavily linked with the Old Trafford club ahead of the new campaign.

United are said to be keeping a close eye on Camavinga’s situation at Rennes, with the Ligue 1 outfit unable to convince him to agree fresh terms as of yet.

He has established himself as one of the club’s key players since breaking into the first-team picture in 2019, making 39 appearances in all competitions last season.

Camavinga has gained plenty of admirers as a result of his cultured range of passing and excellent defensive screening, earning comparisons to Chelsea and France midfielder N’Golo Kante in the process.

United have reportedly been tracking the teenager for some time, but appear poised to firm up their interest in his services over the coming weeks and months.

Club chiefs are said to be keen on mounting an approach this summer and are not prepared to wait another year for the opportunity to snap him up, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

It is claimed that the Red Devils are wary of the competition they would face to land Camavinga on a free transfer.

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have also been credited with an interest in the player, who has been selected to represent France at the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo.

However, Camavinga is said to be ‘open’ to the possibility of a move to United, suggesting that Old Trafford may well be his preferred destination.

It remains to be seen whether the 20-time Premier League champions will be successful in bringing him to Manchester this summer.

Rennes would reportedly be willing to entertain an offer in the region of just £25.7million, with the French club aiming to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.

Meanwhile, Camavinga’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, recently revealed that a number of prestigious European sides have already expressed a strong interest in the midfielder.

“Believe me we have a lot of offers for this year, a lot of offers, and good ones, I mean top, top clubs,” Barnett told SNTV back in May.

“He is good enough [to play for a Champions League club]. But we don’t want to rush anybody. I am an old man and I’ve learnt a lot of lessons in football as well.

“There is the right time to move on and playing games is the most important thing at his age.  Playing in a good club is nice and learning for him. It might be this year he wants to have another year.

“He has got to talk to his family, his father. We will all sit down and decide. We will talk to Rennes as well and decide. There is no rush for him.

“He’s probably the best young player in the world. He has just turned 18, about three, four weeks ago. So he is younger than all the others.
