Manchester United are planning to beat Arsenal to the signing of Alexander Isak according to reports. United have conceded defeat in the pursuit of Erling Haaland it appears with Manchester City and Real Madrid the two likeliest clubs to sign the Norwegian frontman.

United and Arsenal are both in need of a new starting centre-forward in the summer transfer window.

As of July 1, the Gunners currently stand to be without a single senior out-and-out striker with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah both out of contract this summer.

Edinson Cavani is likewise set to leave United on a free while Cristiano Ronaldo may also depart and Mason Greenwood’s future in football is unclear.

Haaland is the most sought-after striker on the planet with it expected he will depart Dortmund with a release clause in the region of £63million becoming active.

But United and Arsenal will not be signing the striker and are looking at alternatives, with Isak well known to be one of the Gunners’ top targets.

Now, though, the Daily Mirror say that the Real Sociedad forward is also wanted by the Red Devils.

It’s claimed that the Swedish international is viewed by United as the next best option this summer after Haaland.

They are confident Isak would be good value for money even though Sociedad, fighting to qualify for European football, are believed to want around £60m for him.

The player has a release clause of around £75m in his contract with the club having paid as little as £5.5m for him in 2019.

The 22-year-old, formerly of Dortmund himself, has eight goals and three assists in 31 games this season after racking up 17 goals in 44 appearances last term.

In his three seasons at the Anoeta he has racked up 41 goals in 120 games at a rate of one goal in every three games.

Arsenal and United are in direct competition for the Premier League’s fourth Champions League spot and the winner could the team who are most likely to sign Isak.

Whoever pips the other to fourth will have the lure of top-tier European football to offer as well as the lucrative financial benefits that come with being in the competition.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is however confident that even if his side miss out on fourth, they can still attract elite talents to north London.

“A lot of players who don’t play here are willing to come to Arsenal,” he said.

“As a club we can attract anybody’s attention because of our history, who we are, the values we represent, the players who have played here in the past and the managers who were here.

“If they believe this is the right club and we believe they’re the right players and can give them the opportunity, so be it.”
