Manchester United are interested in signing Ruben Dias – but will now have to pay through the nose for the Benfica centre-back.
United forked out £80million in the summer to secure the services of Harry Maguire from Leicester.
The 26-year-old has settled in well at the club but not been able to impact the defence as much as hoped.
Another reinforcement to the backline arrived in the form of right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
With David de Gea committing his future to the club this season, it seemed like United settled on a regular back five.
But that is not the case, according to Portuguese newspaper Record.
The publication claim United want to sign Benfica defender Dias to partner him with Maguire.
Dias, 22, is set to be given an improved contract by the club which will see his release clause rise from £59million (€66m) to £79m (€88m).
The Eagles youth product is also set to be named club captain after the retirement of Luisao last year.
That has not deterred United’s interest in player, though, according to the report.
Benfica are aware that Juventus and Atletico Madrid are monitoring the rising star.
Lyon have tried to sign Dias in the past but have come up short in their efforts.
United handed Victor Lindelof a new contract this season which makes the apparent pursuit of Dias peculiar.
The Swede has not performed well alongside Maguire, however, and it has been reported elsewhere that Kalidou Koulibaly tops a list of centre-back targets.
