Man Utd fans in agreement over Donny van de Beek after performance vs Liverpool

Manchester United fans are in agreement over Donny van de Beek after his performance against Liverpool.

The Dutchman, who arrived from Ajax for £40m last summer, was given only his ninth start of the season in the 3-2 FA Cup fourth-round win at Old Trafford.

Scoring just one goal and making on assists in 21 games, it has been no secret that the 23-year-old has struggled under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And when he was given the chance to make an impact against United’s historic rivals, he was unable to take it.

Van de Beek was given 66 minutes on the pitch before being replaced by Bruno Fernandes, whose 78th-minute free kick won the game.

While he found Marcus Rashford for the assist to Mason Greenwood’s opening goal, it was a quiet game for the 23-year-old.

And it saw the United faithful make a bid decision about the midfielder on Twitter.

“What does Van de Beek do – he looked lost in his game,” one supporter said.

Another commented: “Don’t really know what Van de Beek does. Absolutely ineffective.”

While a third held nothing back, with: “Really bizarre performance from Van de Beek today.

“Just seemed to be hanging around on the edge of the area instead of getting involved in build-up whenever United has the ball.”

And a fourth added: “What does Van de Beek offer on a football pitch?”

A fifth suggested the midfielder has reached a turning point, with: “Van de Beek did not take his chance.

“There was no reason to have him in the starting formation.”

With a sixth writing: “Van de Beek was so poor. Couldn’t get involved at all.”

And a final supporter added: “Van de Beek really didn’t do much to suggest he should be playing more regularly.”

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool after 18 minutes before Rashford’s incredible pass found Mason Greenwood for the equaliser eight minutes later.

United took the lead through the assist-maker – but defensive hesitancy allowed the Egyptian to get his second.

But Van de Beek’s replacement fired the ball into the bottom-right corner from a set piece for victory.

It comes as United legend and Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar has revealed what the club have told him about the struggling midfielder.
