Man Utd finally confirm Martinez signing – but fans baffled by his height
Manchester United have confirmed they have reached a £57million agreement with Ajax for Argentine centre-back Lisandro Martinez.
The 24-year-old is expected to sign a five-year contract, with a further option of an extra year. United will part ways with £49m, subject to a medical, before £8m in add-ons – personal terms are being finalised alongside a UK visa.
Martinez has impressed for the Dutch outfit since he made the move to Amsterdam – initially as a midfielder – in 2019. Standing at 1.75m, 5ft 9in, United fans have all expressed their concerns about the height of the Argentine.

One fan tweeted: "He’s 5 foot 9, I don’t remember a successful Premier League centre-back that was his height ever. But I want to be wrong."
"Lisandro Martinez is like 5ft 9ins maybe I can actually have a go at centre-back always thought if I was taller I’d be unreal there," a second joked. A third added: "I've never seen that Martinez play but I'd be wary about a 5 foot 9 centre half."
A fourth tweeted: "5’9 CB in the Premier League? I’m sorry but Martinez's £49million could be the maddest transfer I’ve ever seen."

Martinez has drawn comparisons with Javier Mascherano, who is five-foot-nine, but one centimetre taller.
Like Martinez, Mascherano was converted into defence, and he enjoyed a lot of success there – despite his diminutive stature. However, Martinez's height doesn't have a direct comparison in the English top flight.
Nathan Ake has experienced success at Manchester City and Bournemouth, but he stands 3 inches taller than Martinez at 5ft 11in.
