Manchester United have created the “perfect scenario” to force transfer activity from their board before the Deadline Day.
The Red Devils have been quiet in the transfer window, with midfielder Donny van de Beek the only new face this summer.
And the club only have six days left to complete any prospective deals before the window slams shut on October 6.
They have also been linked with moves for Jadon Sancho and Alex Telles – but have struggled in negotiations with Borussia Dortmund and Porto respectively.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been battling on two fronts as the results on the pitch have not gone his way either.
United lost a pre-season friendly to Aston Villa before losing their campaign opener to Crystal Palace 3-1 and needing a 100th-minute penalty to see off Brighton, added to a 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Luton.
But a “well-known manager” has told The Athletic that the poor start to the season could actually play in United’s favour.
They said: “The knock-on effect is huge. This happens even when you lose games in pre-season. A bad result triggers a reaction — from agents, from inside the club.
“I remember once telling a chairman we needed a striker. He said we had no money but then we did not score in a pre-season game.
“I asked him to do a loan and, two hours later, he called me back; said he had paid several million out of his own personal money, rather than the club accounts — and it was all a reaction to us not scoring a goal in pre-season.
“Every match affects the window. Injuries provide the same response or panic. Even if you win, it can be very funny.
“One of my teams was a smaller club but we won a couple of games in August and agents started calling, pitching the big player who could take us into Europe.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer probably had the perfect scenario at Brighton (where Manchester United scraped a win on Saturday). If you win games but look bad or short, your owner still thinks he needs to invest.”
Another player who has been linked with United is Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele, who has sparked a fresh row with the club.
