Man Utd have obvious decision to make with Anthony Martial

Manchester United should allow Anthony Martial to leave the club over the summer after a number of disappointing performances since he returned to the side – according to Alan Shearer. The Frenchman, who was once described as the Red Devils’ Pele by Joel Glazer, has struggled with injuries this season and has now been slated by Shearer after his drab display against West Ham on Sunday.

Martial can be excellent when in top form however he has rarely shown his best over the last few seasons. This pattern has not changed this year with injury problems restricting his game time.

He has missed a total of 27 matches through hip, hamstring, back and achilles problems this year with the issues a major concern for Erik ten Hag. He has failed to impress since his return to the team too and he failed to change the game when replacing the ineffective Wout Weghorst against West Ham.

Ten Hag now faces a big decision over the Frenchman’s future. The Dutchman has made his intention to sign a new striker clear with Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen among the names linked and any new arrival would severely limit Martial’s game time.

The easiest option would be to sell him to make room and create funds for those coming in.

A takeover of the club may make that eventuality more likely given the Mirror has previously reported that Joel Glazer is a big fan of the player, considering him to be the Red Devils’ Pele and previously stood in the way of him being sold during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure.

Martial was slammed by Shearer after the Red Devils defeat to West Ham on Sunday with the former Newcastle striker arguing that he should be finished at Old Trafford.

“Whatever your opinion is, I think he’s had enough time Martial. You don’t need to make any big decision on him because I think the decision has already been made or it should already have been made,” he told Premier League Productions.

“He’s been there long enough, he’s had enough chances. He’s not good enough to take Manchester United to where they want to go. If he was good enough he would be starting on a regular basis and he would be scoring goals.

“He’s had his time and it hasn’t worked for him, that’s my opinion. We could have been sat here for another few hours and we never felt that they were going to find the back of the net.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Martial will be sold this summer but it is increasingly clear that Ten Hag has a decision to make.
