Man Utd ready to offer five-year deal to midfielder who plays in Bruno Fernandes’ position

Manchester United are willing to offer AC Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu a lucrative contract, it has been claimed. The Turkey midfielder has been linked with a move to Old Trafford on numerous occasions in recent years, with the Red Devils brass reportedly big admirers of his.

And according to reports in Italy, the Premier League giants are set to make their move for the 26-year-old.

That’s according to Gazetta dello Sport, who claim United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is willing to hand the former Bayer Leverkusen ace a five-year contract at Old Trafford.

News of United’s reported interest in acquiring Calhanoglu’s services comes amid protracted contract talks between the midfielder and Milan.

Calhanoglu’s current deal at the San Siro is set to expire at the end of the season. Milan are hoping to tie him down to a new contract but have so far been unsuccessful in convincing him to put pen to paper.

Manchester United are reportedly willing to offer Hakan Calhanoglu a five-year contract at Old Trafford

If United were able to swoop in and sign Calhanoglu, his arrival would lead to even sterner competition in the heart of the team’s midfield.

Calhanoglu would have to rival Portugal international Bruno Fernandes for a spot in the starting XI, although that would take some doing given how integral the former Sporting Lisbon man has become since his arrival in January.

United new-boy Donny van de Beek – who arrived at the Theatre of Dreams in September – is already struggling to get a foothold in the team, a struggle former Red Devils midfielder Owen Hargreaves reckons is down to the fact he’s too similar a player to Fernandes and World Cup winner Paul Pogba.

“Because they have two eights in there in Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba,” he told BT Sport. “Again it comes down to recruitment. Liverpool, when they need something, they get something they don’t have.

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may change formation permanently due to two players

“I’m sure he is going to get a run of games but when you spend £40 million on a player you’d like to think he’d play, but I think Ole will find a place when it’s available.”

Solskjaer is well aware of the criticism of his decision to not fully blood the Netherlands international into the starting XI but insists he will soon play a big role for the team.

“You don’t have to start the first three games to know you’re an important part of the squad,” he said.

“I’d be disappointed if some of my team-mates said I wasn’t important at Manchester United but I didn’t start many games.

“Donny will be very, very important for us. Don’t worry about that.”

Manchester United will be back in action this evening, welcoming RB Leipzig to Old Trafford for their second Champions League Group H match.
