Man Utd set to take advantage of Champions League exit with ‘January exodus’
Ten Hag insists Man Utd have plenty to play for after European exit
Manchester United are ready to take advantage of their humiliating Champions League Group A exit by overseeing a player exodus in the January transfer window, according to reports. Erik ten Hag will likely have to sell to buy this winter, and there are several stars in the shop window.
United played more games than any other club in Europe last season as they lifted the Carabao Cup, took part in the FA Cup final and reached the Europa League quarter-finals via the knockout play-off round.
Their jam-packed schedule has continued in the first half of the current campaign, with three games a week the standard for Ten Hag’s injury-stricken squad.
But United will enter New Year having been eliminated from the Carabao Cup and Champions League, leaving just the Premier League and FA Cup to play for.
With that, Ten Hag’s squad could now be considered bloated when you include the several stars currently unavailable.
And the Dutchman has reportedly green-lit a winter clear-out to refine his ranks and raise funds to strengthen areas in desperate need of upgrades.
According to ESPN, United expect multiple first-team departures in January due to Ten Hag’s eagerness to continue his rebuild.

Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek will likely depart Old Trafford if a suitable offer arrives and could initially leave on loan.
United are also said to be open to offers for Raphael Varane and Casemiro if the duo want to pursue new challenges elsewhere.
The report claims that Anthony Martial is, too, in the shop window next month. It is the club’s final chance to generate a transfer fee for the Frenchman before his contract expiry next summer.
ESPN add that United are set to hold talks with Tottenham Hotspur over Sergio Reguilon, who has a break clause in his loan contract, allowing either club to send him back to north London.

The Spaniard’s future will depend on the severity of Luke Shaw’s fresh injury, which he picked up in the first half of Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.
Tyrell Malacia remains sidelined until the new year after suffering a setback while recovering from a pre-season knee injury.
United’s failure to finish third in their Champions League group also ruled out a European reprieve in the Europa League, which will restrict minutes for young stars like Hannibal Mejbri, Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo.
The Old Trafford giants are expected to be busy in January, but their business looks to be focused on outgoings rather than new arrivals.
