Man Utd staff’s ‘Mason Greenwood theory’ comes to light following Getafe loan
Zlatan Ibrahimovic gives his opinion on Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag
Manchester United’s staff have a theory on the club’s motivation behind Mason Greenwood’s loan move to Getafe, which has not come without criticism. The Red Devils confirmed prior to the transfer window closing that the forward would not play for United again, before sending the forward to La Liga temporarily on deadline day.
Despite Greenwood being paraded on Getafe’s social media platforms, they have come under fire for the decision to loan the man who saw all charges dropped against him – having been away from United since January 2022. The Premier League giants had a big decision to make after conducting their own investigation into the player, which ultimately ended in Greenwood leaving.
But The Independent have claimed that some club staff believe that the management of Greenwood has largely boiled down to the finances involved. They are of the opinion that money is the main factor driving the decisions made at Old Trafford, with players valued at sums reaching nine figures.
Two big-money signings have also had their fair share of controversy this season, as Antony recently returned from a leave of absence amid domestic abuse allegations in Brazil, having been probed by Greater Manchester Police but he made his comeback in the 3-2 Champions League defeat to Galatasaray while the investigation continues.

Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho has had a public falling out with Erik ten Hag and has been banished from the first team facilities at their Carrington training ground complex. Sancho has refused to apologise after disagreeing with his head coach’s comments on social media and looks to be heading out of the door when the January transfer window opens.
But club staff’s insistence that money is the overriding factor in many of United’s decisions will come as a worry to supporters and even Ten Hag, who hope that success on the pitch is prioritised at a time of crisis within Old Trafford.

Following a disappointing start to the season that has only recently seen United move into the top half of the Premier League table, the Dutch boss’ position has been questioned.
The recruitment, led by Ten Hag, has come in for scrutiny and despite Sancho’s spat with the boss it remains to be seen whether the club will part ways with their £72m man if they are led by the finances involved.
United would likely face a big financial hit should they sell Sancho in January, while Greenwood’s future remains up in the air after the club failed to find a buyer in the summer and they clearly were unwilling to pay up the remainder of his contract – perhaps with the optimism that at Getafe he can regain his form and build up some value once again.
