Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani is willing to accept a reduced salary in order to join Barcelona in the January transfer window, according to reports. The Catalan giants are said to be interested in bringing Cavani to the Nou Camp on a six-month loan deal, with Xavi a keen admirer of the Uruguay international.
Cavani only joined United at the start of last season and played an important role in helping the Red Devils to a second-placed finish in the Premier League table.
He chipped in with 17 goals in all competitions, earning a new one-year contract at Old Trafford in the process.
However, the 34-year-old has been restricted to a bit-part role in recent months, with Cristiano Ronaldo emerging as United’s first-choice marksman since returning to the club over the summer.
Cavani will be out of contract at the end of the campaign as things stand and is yet to sign a new deal with United, suggesting that a move elsewhere could soon be on the cards ahead of next season.
Barcelona are believed to be keen on securing the forward’s services in the January transfer window as Xavi looks to use the mid-season market to his advantage.

The La Liga heavyweights have also been linked with Ferran Torres of Manchester City in recent weeks, but it seems as though a move for Cavani could be their overwhelming priority at the turn of the year.
Barcelona have already been encouraged by initial talks with Cavani in which he expressed a desire to accept a significantly reduced wage, according to AS.
The report claims that United’s veteran striker would ‘look very favourably’ on the idea of leaving the club in search of first-team football ahead of the second half of the season.
He will need to lower his wage demands in order to join Barcelona as a result of the club’s unenviable financial situation, but is reportedly willing to do so.
Barcelona are now said to be in talks with United over the possibility of a half-season loan move before Cavani’s current deal at Old Trafford runs out in the summer.
They are said to have tabled the offer of a ‘small fee’ to test United’s resolve, but it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils will allow their man to leave ahead of the Premier League run-in.
Cavani has been out of action since the end of October with a tendon injury but is expected to return to first-team contention over the next few weeks.
United interim boss Ralf Rangnick delivered a positive update on Cavani’s fitness on Friday ahead of his side’s match against Norwich City on Saturday evening.

“The only possible candidate might be Edi, but we have to wait and see,” Rangnick told reporters at a press conference.
”He was training with the team yesterday and the couple of days before that, so we have to wait and see how he feels.”
Cavani has made eight appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal against Tottenham back in October in the process.
