Manchester United players believe it is ‘essential’ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is sacked for the club to reach their targets, according to reports. United are currently sixth in the Premier League table, having won just one of their last six matches in the competition. The Red Devils are already nine points behind league leaders Chelsea.

Two of United’s four defeats have come at home to their closest rivals.

They were annihilated 5-0 by Liverpool last month before a comprehensive 2-0 defeat to Manchester City two weeks later.

Solskjaer has also had to rely on late goals from Cristiano Ronaldo in three of their four Champions League matches to keep their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages alive.

United chiefs have continued to brief that they are behind Solskjaer, who has a contract until at least 2024.

But the Daily Record claims some of the first-team players are now convinced the Norwegian is not the right man for the job.

United have already been linked with some top managers despite Solskjaer still being in place at Old Trafford.

Antonio Conte was keen on the job before he replaced Nuno Espirito Santo at Tottenham.

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, now at Paris Saint-Germain, is a long-term target.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers and ex-Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane are also among the favourites if Solskjaer were to be sacked.

Zidane has been out of work since leaving Real at the end of last season.

Former Crystal Palace midfielder Darren Ambrose would like to see the Frenchman in English football.

“Brendan Rodgers, we know exactly what he’s about and know what he has done at Leicester,” Ambrose told talkSPORT. “Zidane as well.

“A lot of people question if he is a good manager, because he had such a good squad at Real Madrid.

“But to win three Champions Leagues in a row… it doesn’t matter what squad you have, you have to have the opportunity and you are classed as an elite manager if you can do that, whether it is Barcelona, Real Madrid or whoever it may be.

“I would love to see Zidane come to Manchester United, come to the Premier League and see what he can do.

“He can’t do much worse.”

United face a trip to Watford in the Premier League this Saturday before a vital Champions League match away at Villarreal the following Tuesday.
