Manchester United target Casemiro has opted to pursue a move to the Red Devils over the coming days after holding a meeting with Real Madrid chiefs regarding the potential switch, according to reports. United are said to have stepped up their pursuit of Casemiro after missing out on the signing of Adrien Rabiot, who was recently in talks with the club but is not expected to join Erik ten Hag’s squad as a result of his exorbitant wage demands.

Casemiro has since emerged as a top target for United, who have been desperately trying to land a new first-choice holding midfielder throughout the summer transfer window but to no avail as of yet. The Brazilian playmaker has now decided that he would like to make the move to Old Trafford, with a formal agreement between all parties understood to be closer than ever, according to El Chiringuito.

Meanwhile, ESPN are reporting that Casemiro recently met with Real Madrid’s hierarchy to discuss the possibility of a move to United, while further talks with Carlo Ancelotti have been scheduled as a matter of urgency. The player was initially unsure about linking up with Ten Hag and his players in Manchester but is said to have warmed to the idea over the last few days due to the wages on offer and is now prepared to join United after receiving an initial proposal from the club earlier this week.

United are reportedly willing to double Casemiro’s current salary in order to prise him away from Real Madrid, with those in power at Old Trafford hoping to have him registered in advance of Monday’s crunch Premier League fixture against bitter rivals Liverpool. A deal is yet to be struck at club level with Real Madrid, though, which suggests that further work will need to be done in order for United to rubber-stamp the move as quickly as possible.

Casemiro’s arrival would certainly solve one of the many problems facing Ten Hag over the course of this season, with the Dutchman having been eager to sign a new midfielder since taking charge at United earlier this summer. United were previously left frustrated in their efforts to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona before pulling out of a move for Rabiot earlier this month over the Frenchman’s lucrative salary expectations.

The Red Devils have also been credited with an interest in Brighton playmaker Moises Caicedo, who was arguably the best player on the pitch as the Seagulls registered an impressive victory at Old Trafford on the first day of the new Premier League season. However, it seems as though Casemiro has emerged as the chosen one and it remains to be seen whether a full agreement can be reached in the not-too-distant future.

Ancelotti’s admiration for the player could potentially spell trouble with regards to United’s hopes of snapping him up over the next few days, though. The Real Madrid boss previously insisted that Casemiro is a one-of-a-kind player who would be difficult to replace, which suggests that he may attempt to throw a spanner in the works for United in spite of the midfielder’s desire to join them before next month’s transfer deadline.

“If we are going to look [in the market] for a copy of Casemiro, we’ll make a mistake,” Ancelotti told reporters at the start of this year.

“There are none in world football, he’s unique. But other players can play as a pivot. [Eduardo] Camavinga played there, who has other characteristics. He carries the ball well but he doesn’t have Casemiro’s tactical ability, I’ve never had a pivot like him.”
