Man Utd team news: Expected 4-2-3-1 vs Liverpool as Solskjaer makes Martial decision

Liverpool v Man Utd: Premier League preview

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces the biggest test yet of his team’s title credentials in Sunday’s Premier League showdown against Liverpool. Solskjaer must get his team selection right against Jurgen Klopp’s side if the Red Devils are to stay top – and Express Sport has looked at the manager’s likely line-up.

Goalkeeper – De Gea

Solskjaer will stick with David de Gea in goal for Sunday’s blockbuster clash against the defending champions.

Dean Henderson kept a clean sheet when he was given the nod for United’s FA Cup win over Watford last weekend.

But the 23-year-old has made just two Premier League starts since being brought back to Old Trafford to challenge De Gea for the No1 spot.

De Gea was back in goal for last week’s win over Burnley which fired the Red Devils to the top of the table, and the Spaniard will be trusted with keeping Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and co off the scoresheet.

Defence – Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Maguire, Shaw

United’s defence pretty much picks itself at the moment.

Eric Bailly has impressed in the absence of Victor Lindelof through injury in recent weeks.

The Swede has a chance of being fit for Sunday’s game, but Bailly will keep his place alongside Harry Maguire at the heart of the defence.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a shoo-in at right-back spot, while Luke Shaw should start at left-back as he continues to hold off the challenge of Alex Telles.

Midfield – Fred, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes

Fred and Scott McTominay look likely to form the double pivot in front of United’s defence.

The pair have been Solskjaer’s most trusted combination this season and will have to be at their best to keep the hosts at bay.

The undroppable Bruno Fernandes will of course continue his role as the Red Devils’ playmaker, as he looks to unlock a Liverpool defence shorn of their first-choice centre-backs.

Nemanja Matic will hope to recover from a groin injury time but may have to settle for a place on the bench – as will Donny van de Beek despite the Dutch midfielder’s start against Watford in the FA Cup.

Attack – Rashford, Cavani, Pogba

Anthony Martial is expected to fall short in his battle to recover from a hamstring injury suffered against Burnley in midweek.

Solskjaer might have opted to go with Edinson Cavani up front in any case, with the hugely experienced Uruguay forward having started the last two games for which he was available.

Man Utd wages: Pogba and De Gea ahead of Cavani and Fernandes as salaries emerge

Paul Pogba has impressed for United in recent weeks and likely to play on the left, which means Marcus Rashford will be deployed on the right of the Red Devils attack – while new signing Amad Diallo could be an option from the bench.

Predicted Manchester United team vs Liverpool (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Maguire, Shaw; McTominay, Fred; Rashford, Fernandes, Pogba; Cavani.
