Manchester United are likely to sign Erling Haaland in this summer’s transfer window, an experienced director believes. The Norway international is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top target. But landing him won’t be straightforward with a number of other clubs also keen to strike a deal.
Manchester United tried to sign Haaland from Red Bull Salzburg in January last year.
However, they ultimately missed out with Mino Raiola ensuring his client joined Borussia Dortmund instead.
Haaland has been nothing short of sensational in the time since, scoring 31 goals in the Bundesliga and Champions League combined so far.
As a result, United’s interest remains strong and they’ll be in the mix to land the Norway international when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season.
And an experienced director, speaking to The Athletic, thinks United will sign Haaland – and trigger a change in the market.

“The market needs — and what I think will happen — one or two big ones to move,” he said.
“Manchester United to do Erling Haaland at £100 million, for example, which then gets Dortmund into the market.
“That’s a deal that never happened in January to get the market going, whereas I can’t see that not happening this summer.
“If you look at Chelsea, they have Thomas Tuchel, I think they will believe he is the man to win them the Premier League again.
“So I wouldn’t be surprised if they go and spend money — (Roman) Abramovich has got it. Man United, if they finish second, they are going to have to add to the squad and have got financial power. Everton seem to have money to go and do one or two.

“So eventually money will start to come back into the ecosystem, which will lead to a busier transfer market.
“But what I think you will see less of — as opposed to two years ago — West Ham buy a player for £15 million who is a bit of a punt. I don’t think they’ll do that.
“It will be clubs buying one or two players who will improve their starting XIs, or they won’t do anything.”
A leading agent also thinks there’s going to be some big spending this summer, despite the coronavirus crisis rumbling on.
“If (Kylian) Mbappe goes to Madrid, Haaland goes to City, do PSG then buy (Harry) Kane? Then the whole thing moves again,” they’re quoted as saying.
“It needs something like that.
“Yes, some of the money will be held back to clear debts. But you know what it’s like, once one spends, they all spend.
“Are we still going to have big deals? Of course.
“Haaland will have a market. The top, top, top player will always have a market and the clubs will always find a way to get the funds for a deal.
“But on the rest, just before the top, either average, average-plus, less than average, for me, it’s just going to be a market where it’s about swaps, loans, obligations to buy.”
United aren’t the only club in for Haaland.
Real Madrid are big admirers of the Norway international, even if their preference appears to be Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe instead.
Chelsea are in the mix, with Thomas Tuchel determined to bring Haaland to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Manchester City view the Dortmund star as the perfect replacement for Sergio Aguero, who will depart the Etihad Stadium at the end of the campaign.
And Barcelona could swoop to sign Haaland should Lionel Messi leave, with the Argentina international continuing to be linked with a move away.
