Man Utd ‘to move’ for Pickford as next De Gea after walking away from top target

Erik ten Hag wants Man Utd to use FA Cup final defeat as motivation

Manchester United are eyeing Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as a surprising candidate to replace David de Gea, according to reports. Erik ten Hag is on the hunt for a new No 1 at Old Trafford and is said to have landed on the Toffees stopper after dismissing his previous top target.

De Gea has entered the final three weeks of his United contract after 12 seasons as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

His current deal expires on July 1, but he is expected to remain on a significantly reduced salary, despite concerns over his suitability for Ten Hag’s vision.

However, the Dutchman is reportedly keen to recruit competition for the No 1 shirt this summer as he looks to progress rather than regress in his second season as manager.

And according to The Sun, Pickford has emerged as a priority target, regardless of whether De Gea stays or leaves.

The report claims the 29-year-old is keen to play in the Champions League, which United can offer this summer after their third-place Premier League finish.

He played a crucial role as Everton survived their second relegation battle in as many years, sending Leeds United and Leicester City down to the Championship on the final day.

But Everton are said to be willing to cash in for around £30million – a fee that could tempt United, given Pickford’s status as England No 1.

It’s reported that Leeds stopper Illan Meslier was at the summit of Ten Hag’s wishlist before the 23-year-old’s form dipped this term.

And the Red Devils could offer Sean Dyche a reunion with Tom Heaton at Goodison Park as part of a deal for Pickford.
