Manchester United target Raphael Varane has been given the ‘green light’ by Real Madrid to leave this summer, according to reports. The French defender has entered the final year of his contract and is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice centre-back target.
United have prioritised signing a new centre-back after agreeing a deal for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.
Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde are reported targets, but Varane is said to be Solskjaer’s preferred option.
The Norwegian boss is pursuing a long-term partner for captain Harry Maguire, and Varane’s experience and title-winning pedigree make him a prime candidate.
Various reports suggest the 28-year-old is searching for a new challenge this summer, which could open the door to a move to long-standing suitors in United.
JUST IN: Man Utd have Real Madrid Varane concern delaying first transfer bid
According to Marca, the ‘most likely option’ for Varane is to leave Real ahead of the 2021/22 season.
He’s entered the final 12 months of his current deal, and new manager Carlo Ancelotti is yet to convince him to re-sign.
A recent report states that Los Blancos have now given the France international the ‘green light’ to negotiate his exit due to United’s interest.
If Varane is to leave the Spanish capital this summer, Marca have described Old Trafford as his ‘main destination’.

Marca’s report doesn’t state whether United are willing to meet Real’s £51.4million valuation (€60m) however.
But the Red Devils are likely to at least test the La Liga giants’ resolve during the current transfer window.
If Varane signals his intention to play his contract down, Real should be open to finding a compromise over his fee.
His stance isn’t currently known, though, so the story may find a bit of movement once that becomes clear after his break.
Varane was an ever-present in France’s disappointing Euro 2020 campaign this summer, making four appearances.
Les Bleus entered the tournament as favourites but were stunned by Switzerland in the last 16.
Despite leading 3-1, Didier Deschamps’ side crumbled as Switzerland brought it back to 3-3 before triumphing on penalties.
It comes after a frustrating 2020/21 season at Real, where Varane and Co. were beaten to La Liga title by city rivals Atletico Madrid.
After Zinedine Zidane and Sergio Ramos’ summer departure, it feels like the start of a new era at the club.
United will undoubtedly have alternatives ready but seem wholly focused on securing Varane’s services ahead of an important 21/22 campaign as the club’s wait for silverware continues.
