Manchester United are unlikely to sign both Casemiro and Frenkie de Jong in the same transfer window, according to reports. The Real Madrid and Barcelona players are targets for Erik ten Hag. And the Red Devils clearly need reinforcements after enduring a nightmare start to the new Premier League season.

Manchester United had, until recently, been willing to put all their eggs in the De Jong basket.

But with a deal for the Barcelona star looking complicated to broker, the Red Devils have set their sights on recruiting Casemiro from Real Madrid.

According to The Athletic, United’s offer for De Jong was accepted earlier in the summer by Barcelona despite their public stance of the midfielder not being for sale.

Yet while the Red Devils would love to land the 25-year-old, it’s stated it is ‘improbable that the Netherlands international would arrive in addition to Casemiro’.

It’s very much a case of one or the other.

And Casemiro is described as being tempted by United’s offer, while the club’s reasons for pursuing the veteran have also emerged.

Man Utd transfers: Man Utd have a De Jong swap deal that can change everything

The Red Devils insist the 30-year-old, who has won five Champions League titles during his glittering career, has been on their shortlist all summer long.

And they’re said to be appreciative of the player’s character and professionalism.

They also believe that, as an elite midfielder, he has the potential to be a transformative signing over at Old Trafford.

And it’s suggested that, by landing Casemiro, United could then be able to coax the best from Fred.

Fred, throughout the majority of his spell at the club, has been deployed as a defensive-midfielder.

But his performances under Ralf Rangnick towards the end of last season suggests United would be better off using him in an advanced role instead.

While Ten Hag wanted De Jong, it’s possible the Barcelona star will either stay at the Nou Camp or end up joining Chelsea.

Yet Casemiro would certainly be a huge addition given all he’s achieved throughout his career, having won every major trophy during his time in Madrid.

Should a move end up materialising, then the 30-year-old will become the latest Brazilian player to move to Old Trafford.

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, United had the likes of Kleberson, Rafael and Fabio Da Silva and Rodrigo Possebon on their books.

Jose Mourinho recruited Fred in 2018, beating Manchester City to the signing of the midfielder in the process.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer snapped up Alex Telles two years ago, with the left-back arriving from Porto.

Speaking recently, meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano opened up on De Jong and United’s difficulties in getting a deal over the line.

“I see a lot of lies around on the Frenkie de Jong story,” he said.

“I see a lot of lies around on the Frenkie de Jong story,” Romano began. “Let me clarify one thing: the Frenkie de Jong story doesn’t depend on the clubs.

“Man United already reached an agreement with Barcelona more than one month ago. And they are pushing for Frenkie since May.

“Chelsea are ready to enter into it, are ready to pay what Barcelona want. They already told the agents of the player that they are in the race for Frenkie de Jong and that they want to try.

“Both clubs are there, Chelsea and Man United are there and will be there unitl the end if Frenkie will change his mind.

“But nothing is changing on the clubs’ side until Frenkie changes his mind. And now, as I am speaking, Frenkie is still in the same position: he wants to stay at Barcelona.

“The only way to change this story is Frenkie. It’s not Man United making a new bid, it’s not Chelsea making a big proposal. It’s not just about money, it’s about Frenkie’s idea, Frenkie’s decision.”
