Pep Guardiola has cast doubt on Ilkay Gundogan’s Manchester City future by revealing the midfielder is holding out on signing a new contract.
City want Germany international Gundogan, who has become a key man for them recently in the absence of the injured Fernandinho, to commit to a new deal, with his current contract up at the end of next season.
But the 28-year-old, who joined the Blues from Borussia Dortmund back home for £20million in 2016, has shown no intention of wanting to extend his stay at the Etihad, which has frustrated boss Guardiola.
“We would like to do it, but it depends on the club and him, so I don’t know,” said Guardiola. “Hopefully he can stay. I would prefer him to stay, but at the same time I want to feel he wants to stay, too.
“If he doesn’t want to stay, he has to leave. But we would like to continue. I said before, if he wants to stay, we will talk to him and we can sign the contract.
“We signed the contract with Kevin De Bruyne in a few days, and with other players — with Gabriel Jesus. But he [Gundogan] doesn’t want to right now, so we will wait. When he wants it, we will be here.”
Gundogan has played in 24 of City’s league games this season, with 16 starts. He has scored five top-flight goals, with two assists.
Guardiola was speaking after his Quadruple-chasers stayed top of the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Watford on Saturday.
Raheem Sterling was their match-winner with a 13-minute hat-trick early in the second half, but Guardiola said he wants to see more from the England winger.
“Raheem can do better,” he said. “He scored three goals, we’re delighted, but he can do better. The first half was not the best performance from him – he can do better.”
