Manchester United agree £46m deal to sign Ajax star Lisandro Martinez

Ajax have accepted a £46million offer from Manchester United to sign defender Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentine was not present for the Dutch club’s training session today, with Ajax opting to leave him out as they didn’t want to threaten his move to Old Trafford.

United had two bids rejected for Martinez and they faced competition from Arsenal for the Argentine’s signature.

But Martinez made it clear that he wanted a reunion with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford and talkSPORT say a £46m deal has now been agreed.

The fee satisfies both parties, with Ajax extracting their asking price for the 24-year-old and United getting a left-footed centre-back in return.

Martinez is also adept at left-back and defensive midfield, and will give United versatility in what is a uniquely-challenging season with a World Cup midway through the campaign.

The defender becomes United’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of Tyrell Malacia.

Martinez could join the United squad in Australia, with the Red Devils set to take on Melbourne Victory on Friday.

United hope to wrap up a deal for Christian Eriksen in the coming days but the Dane must undergo a stringent medical given his previous health problems.

A deal for Frenkie de Jong has been agreed but United must convince the midfielder to move to Old Trafford, while a dispute over deferred payments must be settled with Barcelona.
