Manchester United have already submitted an offer for Juventus defender Cristian Romero, according to reports in Italy. Romero spent the 2020/21 season on loan with Atalanta and has reportedly impressed United enough for them to make a bid for his services.
The 23-year-old was a mainstay for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side last season, making 42 appearances across all competitions after joining on loan from Juve in September.
His performances contributed to Atalanta’s impressive third-place finish in Serie A and their progression to the last 16 of the Champions League.
Romero joined Juventus from Genoa in July 2019 for £22million (€26m), but has never actually played for the Old Lady.
Atalanta paid a fee of around £1.7m (€2m) to take the Argentine on a two-year loan deal in September – a deal which also includes an option to make the move permanent.
According to Goal, the Bergamo club have now exercised that option a year early and will pay Juve £14m (€16m) for Romero’s signature.

However, he might not be at Atalanta for much longer, if a report in Italian newspaper Eco Di Bergamo is to be believed.
The report claims United have made a ‘super offer’ worth £38m (€45m) for the Argentina international, an amount that makes it ‘practically impossible’ for Atalanta to say no to.
Atalanta have good relations with United, having sold young winger Amad to the Old Trafford club for a fee which could rise to £37m in January, and could be forced to ‘sacrifice’ Romero for what would be a club-record fee.
Whether he does arrive in Manchester this summer, Romero looks set for the top, having been called up for Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia.
The young centre-back made his Albiceleste debut in Argentina’s 1-1 draw against Chile on Friday, playing the full 90 minutes as Lionel Messi’s penalty was cancelled out by a goal from Alexis Sanchez.

He is aiming to impress Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni ahead of this summer’s Copa America, which is scheduled to kick off on June 13 in Brazil after Argentina and Colombia were dropped as co-hosts amid coronavirus concerns.
United are known to be in the market for a centre-back this summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanting to sign someone to play alongside Harry Maguire.
Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Villarreal’s Pau Torres are all reportedly on their radar, but it seems Romero is also under consideration.
United are also stepping up their efforts to finally land Jadon Sancho, with Borussia Dortmund apparently willing to sell this summer after holding firm on their £110m valuation last year.
