Manchester United are linked with a move for Atletico Madrid star Marcos Llorente, which could have a negative impact on a number of first-team players at Old Trafford. Midfielder Llorente is a reported target for the Red Devils this summer.

Llorente, who started his career at Real Madrid, made a name for himself in last season’s Champions League last-16 win over Liverpool.

The 26-year-old scored two goals in extra time to send the defending champions out of the competition at Anfield.

Spanish outlet AS reported on Friday that United had made a £68.5million bid for Llorente and are willing to double his wages, with Atletico tempted to accept the offer.

Express Sport looks at the current United players who could be affected by Llorente’s arrival.

Nemanja Matic

Matic is more of a defensive-minded player than Llorente but the former Chelsea star has already seen his game time limited this season.

Llorente would likely take up a place in the midfield two at United, with Scott McTominay a likely candidate to partner him.

Therefore Matic’s chances of regular first-team starts are likely to diminish.

The Serbian has a contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2023 and can be a reliable backup for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But for United to progress, they cannot afford to play two defensive midfielders behind Bruno Fernandes and therefore Matic is likely to suffer.

Fred has arguably had his best season in a United shirt this term.

The Brazilian has started 20 Premier League matches, as well as being a regular in the cup competitions.

However, his performance in the FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Leicester earlier last weekend will be a cause for concern for United fans.

Llorente would likely be in direct competition for a starting spot with Fred, vying for a position alongside McTominay when everyone is fit and available.

Donny van de Beek

Llorente cannot only play as a No 8 in midfield but also in the No 10 role.

Van de Beek has struggled to make an impact in his first season at United due to the form of Bruno Fernandes.

He has made just two Premier League starts since his £40m arrival from Ajax.

But add Llorente into the mix, and the Dutchman would have another player to compete with.
