Martinez wants Aston Villa job ahead of Gerrard as he has ‘Belgium fears’

Current Belgium boss Roberto Martinez is reportedly eyeing a return to Premier League management with Aston Villa and is ready to quit over "fears" about the set up.

The 48-year-old has maintained the nation's status as the number one ranked footballing side, but has grown frustrated over their lack of success and believes he may have taken the 'golden generation' as far as he can.

The Sun reports Martinez would now jump at the chance to manage the Villains, despite snubbing an approach from the Birmingham-based side back in 2011.

It is reported the ex-Wigan boss has told close friends he is eager to return to the Premier League for a fourth spell having managed Everton and Swansea alongside the Latics in the top-flight.

The Villa hierarchy have listed Martinez as an option on their shortlist but he is not the number one target.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is their top priority after dethroning Celtic as the undisputed kings of Scottish football.

The former Liverpool captain led the Gers to a first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years, while going the entire campaign unbeaten.

And despite constant rumours linking him elsewhere, Gerrard has consistently stated his desire to stay in Glasgow. His contract does not run out until 2024.

But Villa remain keen on the Rangers manager and will only whey up moves for alternative targets once they have exhausted their pursuit of Gerrard.

Thomas Frank, Ralph Hasenhuttl and Frank Lampard have also been linked with the vacancy alongside Martinez.

The Sun's report states Martinez is keen on a move to Villa but is eager to secure Belgium's place at next year's World Cup before quitting.

Belgium are just one win away from qualifying for the tournament in Qatar and travel to Wales in their final fixture.

It means the Spaniard would be well placed to potentially negotiate a contract on November 16.
