- Chelsea and Manchester United are likely to monitor De Ligt’s situation in Turin
Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt has given his clearest indication yet that he could snub a contract extension at Juventus and seek a move away.
The Dutchman’s current deal runs until 2024 and Juventus have made clear their intention to tie down the 22-year-old to an improved deal.
De Ligt joined Juventus in 2019 for £67.5 million after impressing for Ajax but with the Old Lady falling below their expectations in the last two seasons, rumours suggest De Ligt could choose to leave the Allianz Stadium at the end of his current deal.
De Ligt has made 117 appearances for Juventus since moving to Turin in 2019
When quizzed on his future De Ligt admitted that he is yet to make up his mind and he will put himself first when the time comes to make a decision, throwing his future in Turin into doubt.
‘Negotiations are ongoing at the moment and when the time comes I will decide whether to extend or look elsewhere. I always look at what is best for me in terms of the sporting project,’ De Ligt told Dutch outlet NOS.
‘Two consecutive fourth place finishes are not enough, we have to make progress in that direction because these are disappointing results. Juventus are a club that always wants and must become champions.’
De Ligt was speaking from the Dutch national team camp ahead of their Nations League clash with Wales in midweek and despite an underwhelming campaign for Juventus, he looked back on his own season with positivity.
‘Personally, this is my best year so far, both in terms of playing time and performance. Also because of the injuries to Bonucci and Chiellini, this year I think I have shown what I am capable of.’

Should talks over a new deal stall then Juventus could look to offload their star defender before the end of his deal – news that would no doubt alert the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, now managed by former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.
De Ligt was a key part of the Ajax side that reached the Champions League semi-final in 2019, eventually losing to Tottenham in dramatic fashion.
This season, the 22-year-old made 42 appearances in all competitions for Juventus, scoring three times and helping his side to 16 clean sheets.
