Mauricio Pochettino sends clear message to Chelsea owners and Nicolas Jackson

Four of Jackson’s yellow cards have been for dissent. Pochettino revealed last week that he has already spoken with the £30million summer signing about his conduct.

But that chat does not appear to have had the desired impact. Jackson was yellow-carded again in Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa on Sunday and will now miss the trip to Fulham next Monday.

In a swipe at Jackson, Pochettino has told his side to ‘grow up’. The Argentine said: “We were talking, we need to grow up like a team. Nico is young and is feeling the Premier League.

“Football is about winning but players when they are young need to learn. That is why we feel disappointed. We have too many situations like this.”

Ten-man Chelsea fell to a third defeat of the Premier League season. Ollie Watkins scored the game’s only goal and Chelsea now have just one win from their first six matches this term. Malo Gusto’s red card and subsequent three-match ban added insult to injury.

Pochettino admitted that the big-spending Chelsea owners are ‘disappointed’ with the current form but has urged them to support his plan. Todd Boehly and co. have spent £1billion since buying the West Londoners in May 2022, but have seen just 12 wins in 44 league games.

The Chelsea boss added: “Of course they are disappointed but at the same time they need to support the plan.”

Pochettino was also frustrated by Gusto’s red card, which he felt changed the course of the momentum. He reflected: “First half, I think we deserved more. Second half, we started on top of them but after red card the game changes.

“We need try to build the confidence and give them all of the support they need. The performance is good, not excellent, but we are missing goals.”

Chelsea are now 14th in the Premier League with just five points from six matches. Champions League qualification already seems unlikely for a club whose owners harbour huge ambitions.
