Arsenal legend Paul Merson has had his say on whether he believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United has been a success.

Ronaldo, 37, made the move back to Old Trafford last summer after the club payed Juventus €15million (£12.9m) for his services.

The talismanic Portugal captain netted a hat-trick as his side defeated Norwich 3-2 at home over the weekend as they maintained their hopes of a place in next season’s Champions League.

Paul Merson insists Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United return has been bad for the club

A first-half tap-in, a trademark towering header and a 20-yard free-kick helped Ralf Rangnick’s men to secure the three points. United now travel to Anfield for an extremely tough test against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on Tuesday night.

Speak ahead of the match on Merseyside, Merson praised Ronaldo but insists as a team, it has not worked out for the Portugal international since his return.

‘He was brought in for Champions League football and to win a trophy and Manchester United haven’t done that’, Merson told the Soccer Special panel.

‘He might have done his job, but for me, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not being the manager of the club anymore, they have changed the system for Ronaldo, and it has not worked out, simple as that.

Merson says, whilst Ronaldo is the World’s best finisher, the change of system has not worked

Ronaldo come up against Jurgen Klopp’s quadruple-chasing Liverpool on Tuesday at Anfield

The Arsenal legend also claims the Red Devils won’t stand a chance again Klopp quadruple-chasing side on Tuesday, despite being ‘the best finisher in world football’.

‘Manchester United go to play Liverpool tomorrow, and I don’t give them one bit of a chance. I don’t give them 1% of a chance.

‘Ronaldo is the best finisher in world football, you don’t get 900 goals or how many it is if you’re not a good finisher, but it is not just him, it is everybody, and that is the problem, and it has been like that the whole time.

‘Don’t get me wrong, he is the best finisher their has ever been in football, some people haven’t scored that amount of goals in a Sunday morning! It is phenomenal, but look where they are.’

Ronaldo has been described as the greatest ever finisher by Merson, but has proved a problem

The question remains whether Ronaldo is the problem or not for his side, despite his goals

Merson also said whether or not he believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s return has been a bad signing for the club.

‘Bad signing. Whoever comes into the club as manager this time around will not have Ronaldo at the club. For Ronaldo, it has been good, but it is about the whole team, he has not made Manchester United a better team.

‘I am talking about a team signing, not as an individual signing, if he is an individual signing he should be playing snooker or golf.

‘As a team, they went 42 games without losing away from and they are going to Liverpool tomorrow and if they drew 0-0, it would be the best result of the season.

‘[Ronaldo] He is one of the greatest players of all time and the best finisher in the world, for the team, it has not been great, but for Ronaldo it has been.’
