Merson slams Sheffield United for celebrating promotion with a trophy
‘I got to the final of table tennis at Butlin’s… I didn’t get anything!’: Arsenal legend Paul Merson hilariously slams Championship runners-up Sheffield United for celebrating with a trophy after sealing promotion
- Newly-promoted Sheffield United beat Preston 4-1 at Bramall Lane on Saturday
- The Blades marked the achievement after the match by celebrating with a trophy
- Arsenal legend Paul Merson was not impressed by the post-match celebrations
Paul Merson hilariously criticised Sheffield United for parading a trophy around Bramall Lane after finishing second in the Championship.
The Blades’ promotion party, which was sealed after last week’s 2-0 triumph over West Brom, capped off an excellent afternoon for Paul Heckingbottom’s side, who thrashed Preston 4-1 in style on Saturday.
Sheffield United secured the runners-up spot behind second-tier champions Burnley, who in early April became the fastest team to earn promotion to the Premier League with seven matches to spare.
There were jubilant scenes at Bramall Lane as Sheffield United’s fans, players and coaches commemorated the achievement, but Merson was distinctly unimpressed by the club’s decision to celebrate with a trophy.
Reacting to the celebrations alongside Sky Sports broadcaster Jeff Stelling, who revealed he was quitting his role on Soccer Saturday earlier this weekend, the Arsenal legend joked: ‘What’s the trophy for? I got to the final of table tennis at Butlin’s, and I didn’t get anything.

‘I got beat in the final! Why should they get anything? A trophy for second?’
As Merson carried out his hilarious rant about Sheffield United, his fellow studio pundits including Clinton Morrison, Kris Boyd and Michael Dawson could be heard in stitches in the background.
While accepting the Blades deserved medals for their achievements, the ex-England star went on to explain why he thought the trophy parade was inappropriate.
‘(It’s) brilliant going up, but you don’t have a trophy for second,’ he added.

‘You don’t get a trophy for finishing second in the Olympics and that’s the ultimate ultimate.
‘They’ve just come second in the league and they’re getting a trophy.
‘You don’t get a trophy, you get a medal for coming second in the Olympics that you work for for four years.’
Sheffield United, who were a match away from reaching the FA Cup final this season before suffering a 3-0 defeat against Manchester City in the last four, have not won a major trophy since 1925, almost a century ago.
