Messi and Xavi “speak often” as PSG star opens up on potential Barcelona return

Lionel Messi has revealed that he and current Barcelona manager Xavi “speak often” while adding that he would “love to return” to the Catalan side.

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the 33-year-old’s potential return to his boyhood club in recent weeks, despite having only joined Paris Saint-Germain three months ago.

That was down to Barcelona president Joan Laporta’s comments, where he claimed he was refusing to rule out Messi’s return amid the re-signing of legendary full-back Dani Alves.

And Messi has now confirmed that he would indeed be open to returning to Barcelona, but did not specify whether that would be as a player or in a coaching role.

When asked by Marca about Laporta’s hopes of he and Andres Iniesta returning to the Camp Nou, the Argentine asked whether they meant as a player.

The Marca interviewer responded with: “He [Laporta] did not specify that at the time, although he later said in a later interview that it would not be to be part of the team.”

Messi then stated: “I always said that at some point I will return to Barcelona because it is my home and because I am going to live there.

“And obviously if I can contribute and help the club I would love to come back.”

Messi’s close friend and former teammate Xavi took charge of his first Barcelona game on Saturday as the Blaugrana narrowly edged past rivals Espanyol in a 1-0 affair.

The two legends won countless trophies together at the Camp Nou and Messi was adamant that Xavi is the right man to lead Barcelona to glory.

Messi said: “He can contribute a lot. He is a coach who knows a lot, knows La Masia perfectly and has lived in Barcelona since he was a child. He has renewed the belief in Barcelona because he is a person highly respected by the fans and by the players.

“He will be a very important coach for the younger footballers because he will teach them. With him the team will grow a lot. I do not have any doubt.”

He also added: “I speak often with Xavi. Since ever. We are friends, we have shared many things and since he left we have kept in touch.

“I don't remember what I told him in the message, I congratulated him on this new step and I wish him well.”
