Mikel Arteta’s ‘fantastic’ Arsenal tipped to beat Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea to title

Arsenal have been tipped to beat Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea to the Premier League title this year, because Mikel Arteta has a “gifted” squad at his disposal. Former Premier League goalkeeper David James thinks the only thing standing in Arsenal’s way would be Liverpool or City replicating their form from the last two years.

Arsenal made a brilliant start to their Premier League campaign on Saturday as they put three past newly-promoted Fulham.

The Gunners have been active in the transfer window to improve their squad, and have new faces across the board.

Willian, who signed on a free transfer from Chelsea, put in a fantastic performance and set up all three goals in the rout.

One of the scorers, Gabriel Magalhaes, is Arsenal’s most expensive acquisition of the window so far, setting the Gunners back £26million.

And James believes their new-look side can challenge for trophies right away, having won the FA Cup and Community Shield already this summer.

Arteta has got Arsenal playing short passing football, working the ball out from the back, a style they showcased against Fulham.

Speaking on Thursday, James predicted that only an enormous effort from Liverpool or City could stop the Gunners winning their first league title since 2004.

He said: ‘I just think with Arsenal, what Arteta was doing, or trying to implement last season and they started doing, he’s had more time to get his team working well.

“They looked fantastic against Fulham, arguably you would expect them to win.

“I think Arteta’s got an opportunity with a gifted squad to go all the way.

“There’s no reason why they can’t do it, other than Manchester City and Liverpool reproducing the sort of form they’ve been doing over the last two years.”

James followed up that claim by warning Liverpool that they’ll find it is harder to retain the league than to win it in the first place.

He continued: “As everyone knows, winning the league is not easy.

“Winning the league twice is very, very difficult.

“When Liverpool have had almost two perfect seasons, you wonder whether they can reproduce that.

“As a football follower I just like what Arteta’s doing and I think they’ve got the chance.”
