Jose Mourinho is eyeing a reunion with Manchester United star Nemanja Matic, who announced that he will leave the club at the end of the season.

The Serbian is just one of several players looking to depart Old Trafford in the summer transfer window with many others coming to the end of their contracts. Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani are expected to follow suit.

Matic has spent five years at Old Trafford when he moved from Chelsea to reunite with Mourinho after he made the midfielder a priority. And after two years of consistent football, the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signified a decline in playing time.

Now instead of renewing his deal an extra year, as per his current contract, the 33-year-old has announced on social media that he will leave when the season is up. While a next club has yet to be decided, Mourinho is interested in another reunion – this time at AS Roma.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, the Portuguese coach wants him for a third time after spells at United and Chelsea. The Special One is desperate for a defensive midfielder and knows how to utilise the Serbian well.

Jordan Veretout is expected to leave the Stadio Olimpico this summer after being told by Mourinho that he is surplus to requirements. And Matic is believed to be his replacement going into next season.

It has been a tough campaign for the former Tottenham boss since moving to Serie A for the second time in his career but there has been a late push for silverware in Europe. The Romans knocked Bodo/Glimt out of the Europa Conference League to set up a semi-final against Leicester.

They also sit fifth in Serie A, five points behind Juventus in a somewhat disappointing campaign in the league. After splashing out on the likes of Tammy Abraham and Marash Kumbulla, a top-four spot was almost expected.

Meanwhile, at Old Trafford, the problems continue to stack up after their miserable defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday night. Matic started that match as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz all got on the scoresheet to compound another tough night for the Red Devils.
