Newcastle lodge £25m Zapata bid – both striker and Atalanta ‘open to transfer’

Newcastle United have launched a £25million bid for Colombia international and Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata.

It comes as the latest attempt by the Newcastle hierarchy to buy their way out of what would be an embarrassing relegation given their widely reported Saudi Arabia-led takeover back in autumn.

Manager Eddie Howe is still in the process of implementing his ideas and philosophy, yet the club are aware that they still need to sign additional quality in order to survive the drop.

And The Daily Record now report that 30-year-old Zapata has been identified as the man to boost Howe’s attacking options this transfer window.

Atalanta are reportedly willing to sell Zapata, who has netted 65 Serie A goals in 118 appearances for the side.

Zapata himself is understood to be open to a move to the north-east should the clubs agree a fee.

The Magpies have already made solid signings this January in the form of England right-back Kieran Trippier (£15million) and Burnley striker Chris Wood (£25million).

However, the club believe they still need another striker, central-midfielder and a central-defender before the window closes.

That is proving to be a more difficult task than initially thought, with other clubs raising their prices when it comes to Newcastle targets due to their vast funds.

Newcastle were unsuccessful in their pursuit of promising Lille defender Sven Botman last week after the French side demanded a whopping £45million for the youngster.

Zapata would be a huge signing in their quest to turn the season around, having won just one game all season, though he is only being eyed as a back-up to their preferred option – Darwin Nunez of Benfica.

The Portuguese side are asking for a whopping £50million for their 22-year-old Uruguayan star just 16 months after they bought him from Almeria for less than half the price.
