Newcastle have been told they must include a sell-on in any deal to sign Stade Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, according to reports. The highly-rated teenager, who has been dubbed ‘the next Kylian Mbappe’ in France, is the subject of huge interest from the Magpies, who have opened official talks with the Ligue 1 club in the past 48 hours.
The 19-year-old has eight league goals to his name this season in the French top-flight in 17 outings.
He is now considered to be one of the brightest prospects in Europe following an eye-catching breakthrough campaign that has showcased his ruthless finishing in front of goal.
Newcastle are now working around the clock to bring in a new striker before Saturday’s Premier League clash with Watford.
The relegation six-pointer could potentially see the Magpies climb out of the bottom three if they’re able to pick up three points against the Hornets.
But to maximise Newcastle’s chances of doing that, Eddie Howe feels he needs a new frontman through door having now lost Callum Wilson for at least two months.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle’s first bid for Ekitike is set to be rejected.
While it’s not clear how much the Magpies are offering, it’s understood Reims are not satisfied with the overall proposal.
Instead, they are insistent on any potential buyer including a sell-on clause given the player’s enormous potential.

Interestingly though, it appears Newcastle are not the only Premier League club in the running.
West Ham are also believed to have made a proposal to sign Ekitike.

Further down the line, their squad depth could prove decisive if they are to make this a campaign to remember.
Newcastle have also looked at Liverpool’s Divock Origi but the Reds do not want to sell mid-season.
Burnley are also reluctant to offload Chris Wood given his goal could hold the key to Premier League survival.
Furthermore, Burnley do not want to strengthen one of their relegation rivals.
Patrick Schick is another name that has fallen under consideration but the Bayer Leverkusen forward – who has 17 league goals in 15 games this season – wants to stay put.
