Mohamed Salah begins his Africa Cup of Nations journey on Tuesday afternoon, as Egypt get their quest for glory underway against Nigeria.

The Liverpool winger goes into the tournament as the best player in the competition – and possibly the world – as he hopes to guide his nation to a first AFCON triumph in a decade.

But Nigeria will be a difficult proposition for the Egyptians, with the Super Eagles possessing several Premier League players including Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi.

Let’s not forget Nigeria, who have several recognisable names in their line-up with regards to Premier League audiences.

Kelechi Iheanacho leads the line for the Super Eagles with promising Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze alongside him. Iheanacho’s Foxes team-mate Wilfried N’Didi is in the midfield, as is Rangers winger Joe Aribo.

The backline includes Watford’s William Troost-Ekong and former Chelsea, Hull and Fulham full-back Ola Aina, now of Torino.

The bench looks quite strong, with Everton’s Alex Iwobi among the substitutes, as is captain and former Leciester forward Ahmed Musa, Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka and West Brom defender Semi Ajayi.

Napoli forward Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of the tournament after contracting coronavirus earlier this month.

Nigeria XI: Okoye, Aina, Omeruo, Ekong, Zaidu, Ndidi, Aribo, Iheanacho, Simon, Chukwueze, Awoniyi.

Right, let’s start with Egypt and there is no surprise that Mohamed Salah starts for Egypt his country’s first Africa Cup of Nations group game.

The Liverpool man lines up alongside Aston Villa’s Trezeguet in a front three with Stuttgart’s Omar Marmoush. Behind the front three lies Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny in midfield. The other recognisable Premier League name is Anwar Hegazi, formerly of West Bromwich Albion.

Former Stoke and Huddersfield winger Ramadan Sobhi is on the bench, while Egypt are managed by former Manchester United assistant Carlos Quieroz.

Egypt XI: El-Shenawy, Akram, El-Wensh, Hegazi, Fetouh, Hamdi, Elneny, Trezeguet, Marmoush, Mostafa, Salah.

I’m not sure about you, but I think this Africa Cup of Nations needs a bit of spark.

A few 1-0 victories here and there and that goalless draw between Algeria and Sierra Leone is not what we’re after at all. But it looks like we’ve got the perfect tonic for that.

Enter stage right, Mohamed Salah. It’s time for the Liverpool star to get involved in the action as his Egypt side take on Nigeria in a bumper AFCON group game.

Kick-off is at 4pm (GMT) so in around 45 minutes. Let’s not hang about as it’s time to meet the teams…
