Jamie O’Hara has urged the Premier League to cancel the final round of fixtures before the World Cup, insisting that ‘players are dropping like flies’ due to the intensity of the schedule.

England’s injury woes continued on Wednesday as Ben Chilwell limped off during Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Dinamo Zagreb with what appeared to be hamstring tear.

Chilwell joins England stars Kyle Walker, Reece James and Kalvin Phillips on the injury list, with the trio each fighting for fitness ahead of Gareth Southgate’s squad selection later this month.

Meanwhile, midfielders N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba have been ruled out for France, and Son Heung-min’s World Cup hopes under serious threat after picking up an eye injury against Marseille in midweek.

In a bid to protect the players ahead of the tournament, O’Hara suggested on Thursday that the Premier League should cancel the final round of fixtures.

‘For England, it’s a serious problem. Players are dropping like flies,’ he told talkSPORT.

‘We keep going on about it, the amount of fixtures that they’re having the squeeze in before the World Cup starts. It’s big games as well.

‘Normally, you have Carabao Cup games and players will get left out of them, but this game, the Champions League, this was supposed to be played in December. They’ve played them all!

‘The big players have had to play in these games to get the club through.

‘Cancel the last round of games in the Premier League. Give them a bit of breathing space. The Premier League should do it and if not the FA should get involved.’

Following the penultimate round of Premier League fixtures ahead of the World Cup this weekend, the players gear up for the EFL Cup third round in midweek before the final series of fixtures on November 12 and November 13.
