Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans to start Jadon Sancho for Man Utd clash with Leeds

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is planning to start Jadon Sancho against Leeds United at the weekend as Manchester United begin their Premier League campaign at Old Trafford.

Sancho arrived from Borussia Dortmund in July before arriving for his first training session early this week having been given an extended break following the European Championships.

However, the England winger has been preparing for the new season in his time off having been completing a personal training routine between the Euros and his arrival at United's training ground.

It is unknown, though, whether Sancho will be joined in the starting line-up by Raphael Varane, who is set to complete his move to the club this week.

Speaking last week, Solskjaer said that Sancho and Varane would be on the bench for their season opener against Leeds, but it now appears Sancho could make his Premier League debut from the start.

According to The Sun, Sancho will start as part of an attacking trio that also includes Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood behind French forward Anthony Martial.

United are without fellow winger Marcus Rashford until November after the England wideman underwent shoulder surgery following the conclusion of the Euros.

His absence has likely had an effect on Sancho's chances of starting the match, as he did not feature at all during the club's pre-season friendlies.

"Jadon is in for Monday and hopefully then he's in decent nick and can be involved (against Leeds)," stated Solskjaer last week.

Thanks to his personal fitness programme prior to arriving in Manchester, Sancho now looks set to have earned himself a start and will be hoping to continue his fine form from last season.

The 21-year-old provided 36 goal contributions in 38 appearances for Dortmund in 2020/21, taking his overall tally for the club to 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 games.

His excellent form across his four years in Germany caught the eye of United and Sancho is grateful for the opportunity Dortmund gave him.

"I'll always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the opportunity to play first-team football, although I always knew that I would return to England," he said following his move back to England.

"The chance to join Manchester United is a dream come true and I just cannot wait to perform in the Premier League.

"This is a young and exciting squad and I know, together, we can develop into something special to bring the success the fans deserve."

Sancho originally moved to Dortmund from Manchester City in 2017 for £7million without making a senior appearance at the Etihad Stadium.

He will now be aiming to help his new side close the gap on their Manchester Rivals after finishing 12 points behind the Premier League champions last term.
