Paul Scholes tells Man Utd next signing to help unlock Jadon Sancho

Paul Scholes has urged his former club Manchester United to sign a new right-back to help Jadon Sancho fulfil his potential at Old Trafford. The ex-Red Devils and England midfielder is adamant that Sancho would benefit from a more attacking right-back, something he had during his time at Borussia Dortmund in the form of Achraf Hakimi and Thomas Meunier.

Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are continuing to battle it out for a place in Erik ten Hag’s side but there is a sense that a new right-back could still be on the agenda in the transfer window.

Both full-backs favour the defensive side of the game and with Denzel Dumfries and Jeremie Frimpong among those under consideration, Scholes believes Sancho could really take off if there is additional change on the right flank.

When asked if Sancho has done enough this season, Scholes said on BT Sport: “Not yet I don’t think, I still think there’s a lot more to come from him.

“He obviously had his issues and problems that the manager dealt with, he came back and scored a couple of goals.

“I still think there’s a player in there, he just needs the right players around him.

“Remember at Dortmund before, he had a flying right-back going on all the time, which really helped him because he’s not a quick player, he’s more of a skilful player who wants to play football, he wants to play with his centre-forward and right-back.

“If United can possibly find a better right-back it might make him a different proposition.”

Wan-Bissaka’s recent turnaround has since diminished United’s urgency to sign a new right-back. It’s understood the position is no longer among the subjects at the top of the agenda, although the club could still move in the market if one of their current options is sold.

United have the option to trigger Dalot’s contract by a further season, although they are hoping to entice the Portugal international into signing a new deal.

Meanwhile, Wan-Bissaka has plenty of admirers in West Ham, Wolves and Crystal Palace but he has shown determination to fight for his place in recent months.

Sancho is struggling to take off at Old Trafford and he was dropped from the side entirely at the back end of last year – instead travelling to Holland to complete a personal fitness programme.

The England international has reaped the rewards of his hard work, making an instant impact on his return to the United side.

But since then, Sancho’s form has deteriorated again and there are concerns amongst supporters that he is struggling to perform consistently for the Red Devils.

Sancho has netted five times in all competitions this season but his numbers have dropped considerably since his time in Germany with Dortmund.

Ten Hag was recently impressed with his performance as the No.10 in United’s disappointing 0-0 draw with Southampton.

“I think he did quite well as a number ten,” said the Dutchman.

“Like he did against Barcelona and Leicester. He was really decisive against Leicester and also today with some really good actions. One time, he was really close to the goal with a run at the defending line and a cross to Bruno almost came there. He did a good job.”
