Pep Guardiola bizarrely mentioned Julia Roberts when talking about his failures in the Champions League at Manchester City. The Spaniard believes that even winning the competition three times at the Etihad Stadium would not salvage his reputation on the European stage due to the esteemed actor affiliating with Manchester United.

City progressed into the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday, running riot in their second-leg clash against RB Leipzig. Guardiola’s side won 7-0 on the night, triumphing 8-1 on aggregate, and will have struck fear into the hearts of their potential opponents in the next round with their display.

Erling Haaland unbelievably scored five against his former rivals at the Etihad Stadium, matching Lionel Messi’s record of the most goals in a single Champions League match. The Norwegian scored a first-half hat-trick and Ilkay Gundogan got amongst the action, before Haaland grabbed another two. Kevin De Bruyne then put the cherry on top with a smart finish with minutes left on the clock.

Guardiola was full of praise for his side after the full-time whistle sounded, though he did want to make it known that he regarded himself as a ‘failure’ on the European stage. He explained: “’I am a failure in the Champions League.

“If win the Champions League three times in a row I will be a failure. I have three idols in my life. Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Julia Roberts. These are my three idols.”

His inclusion of the three-time Golden Globe winner raised eyebrows given that she was amongst sporting company on the list, though Guardiola jokingly continued: “Julia Roberts years ago came to Manchester – not in the 90s when Sir Alex (Ferguson) was winning titles and titles and titles.

“She came in the period where we were better than United, in these four or five years, right? And she went to visit Man United. She didn’t come to see us. That’s why even if I win the Champions League it will not compare to the fact that Julia Roberts came to Manchester and didn’t come to see us.

“Even if I win the Champions League it will not compare to this disappointment I had.”

It remains to be seen whether Roberts will be passed on the message about Guardiola’s immeasurable disappointment, or if the Pretty Woman star will only visit the Etihad Stadium once a Champions League is added to their trophy cabinet – which City will be hoping is at the end of the season if they can replicate their Leipzig performance in the next round.
