Phillips’ stance on Liverpool move as Man City star available for £35m

Klopp previews Liverpool's trip to West Ham

Liverpool could get their hands on Kalvin Phillips for a cut-price transfer fee this summer, and reports indicate that the Manchester City midfielder would be open to a move. With game time proving virtually impossible to come by for the ex-Leeds United man, he could form part of Jurgen Klopp’s extensive midfield rebuild ahead of next season.

Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Jude Bellingham was expected to be the cornerstone of Klopp’s revamp, but Liverpool have taken themselves out of the running after deciding that the 19-year-old would be too expensive.

Even so, the Reds are desperate for new blood in the middle of the park, and the need will be even greater when a host of players depart in the summer. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Arthur Melo are among those set to leave, although they won’t earn Liverpool a penny in transfer fees.

According to The Daily Star, Klopp has made Phillips one of his main targets and Liverpool are preparing a £35million move for the 27-year-old.

City shelled out £50m to snap him up from Leeds only last summer, but Phillips’ spell at the Etihad Stadium has turned into a nightmare. The former England regular has not started a single Premier League game for the Sky Blues, and manager Pep Guardiola called him out for returning from the World Cup overweight.

A shoulder operation hampered his efforts to break into the starting XI earlier this campaign, while Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final may have been the final nail in the coffin as Guardiola rotated heavily but still didn’t select Phillips.

Displacing central midfielder Rodri has proven nigh on impossible for the Englishman this term. As a result, the same report suggests that Phillips would be keen on a move to Anfield, with Liverpool already letting the player know that they are positioning to swoop.

West Ham and Leeds have also been touted as possible destinations for the City midfielder who, in the space of a season, has gone from one of the main men at Elland Road to starting only two matches in all competitions.

Liverpool boast the opportunity to work under Klopp and the possibility of European football next season. The Reds are currently seventh in the table, one point behind Aston Villa with one game in hand.

It remains to be seen whether City would be prepared to take a £15m hit on Phillips after just 12 months. In terms of replacement options, there have been suggestions that they could re-sign former midfielder Romeo Lavia in the summer if Southampton are relegated from the top flight.
