Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang backed to make Cristiano Ronaldo change during Arsenal contract

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang can emulate Cristiano Ronaldo by changing position if he loses a bit of pace, according to former Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor. Aubameyang committed his future to Arsenal on Tuesday by signing a new three-year contract at the Emirates. The Gabon international reportedly turned down interest from the likes of Barcelona to stay with the Gunners.

Aubameyang has been Arsenal’s leading goalscorer in the past two campaigns and scored a brace in the FA Cup semi-final and final wins over Manchester City and Chelsea respectively last season.

Agbonlahor claims re-signing Aubameyang is the biggest deal Arsenal have completed this summer.

Aubameyang has played from the left in the majority of matches since Mikel Arteta took charge last December.

But Agbonlahor can see him drifting inside in the next couple of years, similar to how Ronaldo has at Juventus.

“For me it’s a massive signing,” Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT.

“Aubameyang, people might disagree with me but he’s the best striker in the Premier League for me, the way he plays.

“He’s a similar sort of player to Thierry Henry for me and he’s the closest that the Premier League have had since Thierry Henry, that sort of player.

“For Arsenal to sign him up, it’s their biggest signing of the summer.

“We go on about Grealish signing but Aubameyang is a massive signing for Arsenal and I really do think with Willian joining, the centre-half Gabriel, I really feel Arsenal will finish in the top four.

“Aubameyang, even if he loses a yard [of pace], he’s still going to be the best striker in the Premier League, he’s still going to be quicker than every defender, and he’s a goalscorer.

“We see Ronaldo’s pace, he’s not as fast as he used to be but he’s changed the way he plays.

“[Ronaldo’s] a goalscorer now and Aubameyang might be that in two years’ time.

“But for me, it’s massive for Arsenal to re-sign him and he will get Arsenal into the top four, for me.”

After penning his new deal, Aubameyang revealed his excitement at the direction the club are heading in.

“Look at the guys that came in [this summer],” Aubameyang told Arsenal.com.

“I think we can do something very big.

“And also the young players as well, they are coming like fire and this is why I stay. Because I know we have something to do.

“I said a few months ago that the best is to come for sure, for Arsenal. It’s time for everyone to respect our club.”
