Prem cult hero, 38, named in England squad by Capello gets international call-up

Curtis Davies will be making his full international debut with Sierra Leone after the former Premier League ace announced he'll be joining their national team.

The ex-Hull City star currently plays for Cheltenham Town in League One after a six-year stint with Derby County which came to an end earlier this year. The 38-year-old has had a 20-year career in professional football, enjoying stays with Aston Villa, Derby County and Birmingham City, playing the majority of his football in England's top-flight.

Despite being named in Fabio Capello's first provisional squad for the England national team in January 2008, he never made his full international debut, instead he played three times for the country's under-21 squad. However, 15 years later, the centre back will represent the country of his father's birth when he takes the field for Sierra Leone in their upcoming friendlies.

Davies announced the news on social media as he took to X and wrote: "I’m delighted to formally announce that I will be joining the Sierra Leone national team for their upcoming friendlies. I thought the opportunity to represent the country of my father’s birth had passed but I feel very proud and humbled to have received the call.

"It will be a proud moment for me to pull on the shirt of The Leone Stars and make my family in Sierra Leone proud but most of all my dad. He did everything in his power to give me the best chance to become a footballer, so I dedicate this all to him. Looking forward to getting going."

Davies received plenty of well wishes from fans who were delighted to hear his news as one user wrote: "That’s absolutely brilliant. Go smash it Curtis," while another told him his father would be proud as they commented: "Congratulations Curtis, much deserved. Your dad will be super proud".

A third fan promised him he'll have the support of Derby County when he dons the Sierra Leone shirt, as they said: "Go Curtis go. He will be very proud and so will the family. The rams family will be behind you".
